So you want to know how to build a wooden fence? Building a wooden fence can be a great DIY project that can add privacy, security, and value to your property. Depending on the design, wooden fences will keep (most) wildlife off of your property. They will not stop burying animals or ones that can leap over it. But it will at least make them work harder to reach you!
Here are some general steps to help you build a wooden fence:
- Determine the fence line: First, decide where you want to place your fence. Mark out the fence line using stakes and string. Make sure you check building codes, setback requirements, and obtain any necessary permits before starting. Even rural land can have a setback requirement for fences, especially if your rural property borders state trust or other government land.
- Measure and calculate materials: Measure the length of the fence line and determine the number of posts, rails, and pickets you’ll need. Calculate the amount of concrete needed for the post holes. Bob Villa has a great article on this.
- Prepare the materials: Purchase the necessary materials and prepare the wood by cutting the posts, rails, and pickets to the appropriate length.
- Dig the post holes: Dig the post holes using a post hole digger. The holes should be deep enough to support the height of the fence and the width of the post.
- Set the posts: Place the posts in the holes and add concrete around them to secure them in place. Use a level to ensure that the posts are straight.
- Install the rails: Once the posts are secure, install the rails horizontally between the posts using screws or nails. Make sure they are level.
- Attach the pickets: Attach the pickets vertically to the rails, leaving a gap between each picket for ventilation and expansion. Use screws or nails to attach the pickets to the rails.
- Finish the fence: Once all the pickets are in place, trim any excess wood and add any final touches, such as caps or paint or stain.
Keep in mind that these are general steps, and the specifics of building a wooden fence may vary depending on the style of fence you’re building and the wood you’re using. It’s also important to take your time, measure carefully, and follow all safety precautions while building your fence.
